Developers speak off the record, journalist suspects claims are off the mark

DS + DSi

This is a surprising development. During a fairly normal round-up of 3DS rumours on IGN last week, the author slipped in an unsubstantiated claim that the new Nintendo portable console will have a processing power close to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This new rumour comes from off-the-record chats with developers that already have the 3DS development kits in their hands. Either that or it comes from a strange and wonderful place where everything is powered by daisy petals and the ground is made of chocolate.

In theory, the power of the 3DS will have to be a lot higher than the DS purely because of the 3D technology that requires two images to be rendered simultaneously.

However, the idea that the new portable will be close to the power of a current-gen HD console is fairly far-fetched, even if the 360 is now almost five years old.
