Sony has announced a new version of the PSP firmware, available now from the official PlayStation site or directly through your PSP provided you have access to wireless connection.

There is currently little reason to bother, however, as the upgrade boasts no new functionality other than a security patch that has been designed to combat recent efforts by hackers, which reportedly saw them able to downgrade the system software using a copy of Lumines in order to run pirate games and homebrew applications.

Coming so close to the previous update, no game currently requires the upgrade although expect that to change in the very near future – Sony will obviously be keen to ensure as many people are running the latest version as possible.

Similar to a Tim Henman match, the interminable tennis game between the manufacturer and hackers continues, of course.
