You could soon be enjoying blockbusters from the silver screen on your mobile phone, thanks to Sony Pictures' Movies on Memory Cards initiative. The scheme, which squeezes full-length movies onto mobile phone-friendly MMC memory cards, has launched with four titles available: Ghostbusters (a Pocket Gamer favourite), Stuart Little, Hitch and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Further films, including Spider-Man 2 and Monty Python and The Holy Grail, will be come available shortly.

Available for £19.99 from the Carphone Warehouse, it's currently little more than an expensive gimmick, but does show how far mobile phones have come in terms of what they can do. Various countries in Europe have services whereby customers can download movies and TV shows direct to their phone over the airwaves, akin to the 3G services in this country.

"Mobile phones are quickly becoming the entertainment device of choice for many consumers”, explained Mike Arrieta, vice president of Sales and Marketing at Sony Pictures Digital. “People are constantly on the move today and watching full-length feature films is a great way for them to use their phone for entertainment. The overwhelming response to the initial two films made it immediately clear that there is a strong demand for high quality content within the mobile market. We will continue to develop products to meet this growing demand," he added.

The films are currently limited to playback on compatible Nokia handsets, including the N90, N70 and 6680 models.
