Companion apps! Second screen experiences! Doing anything other than actually paying any attention to what you're doing!

These things are all the rage nowadays on mobile, and Nintendo looks set to finally get in on the action with a Mario Kart 8 app.

It's called Mario Kart TV and it's part of a mobile and PC service that lets you keep track of your stats, watch video replays, and generally stay more connected with the Mario Kart brand.

You sign in to the app with your Nintendo Network ID, and then you can track your rankings and watch your friends and enemies crash to your heart's content.

The app will be out on iOS and Android, and maybe even Windows Phone, to coincide with the launch of Mario Kart 8 for Wii U on May 30th.
