id Mobile's John Carmack talks future DS and PSP projects
Buy Orcs & Elves DS and gory handheld violence could be on its way

John Carmack has been revealing plans for id Software's newly announced id Mobile division. The division will be responsible for making games for handheld platforms DS, PSP and mobile, with the team's first project looking like it'll be a Wolfenstein-type title for DS and mobile, as previously thought.
"We're really looking forward to seeing how Orcs & Elves does on the DS. It's looking now like our first project is going to be a mobile/DS Wolfenstein-type title. After that, we'll do an original title on the mobile, and what happens after that will determine how we go from there," the veteran developer told Gamasutra.
Discussing whether he thinks mature-rated games will sell on DS or whether they'd be better suited to PSP, Carmack said: "There are a couple new mature-rated titles coming out for DS we're going to be watching the sales numbers… certainly, there are good games we would like to do that would be M-rated, but I'm hedging my bets on that right now where I think it's still kind of risky, but I would love to be proven wrong!"
Looking at the company's future strategy, Carmack believes it likely the company will release titles simultaneously on mobile and DS, and that it may alternate between releasing a known IP (intellectual property) one year and a new one the following year.
The promise of more Doom and Wolfenstein-styled releases on handheld is enough to pique our interest. If you want them on DS, though, you'd better replace Mario Party on your Christmas list with Dementium: The Ward to show some sales support for the handheld's 'mature' titles.
