Get set for mobile games on planes

UK telecoms regulator gives the go-ahead

Get set for mobile games on planes
|

If your phone doesn't have a flight-safe mode, you can't currently play mobile games while flying. But that could be changing soon.

The UK's telecoms regulator Ofcom has signed off on plans to allow people to use their mobile phones on planes, once they're higher than 3,000 metres.

That includes voice calls, which would be transmitted to the ground via satellite (we shudder to think what the roaming charges for that will be).

However, for our purposes, this means a few hours more of mobile gaming to while away a long flight, without arousing the ire of cabin staff.

That said, the proposals have to be passed by the European Aviation Safety Agency and the UK Civil Aviation Authority before they come into force, so don't hold your breath.
