In-Fusio and Orange launch next-generation mobile phone gaming platform

It’s called EGE (standing for Entertainment and Gaming Extensions) and it’s designed to make your mobile phone more entertaining. It works with the Java software upon which most of today’s mobile phone games are based and, without getting too technical, it’ll make it easier for you to try games before you pay for them, set up buddy lists so that you can play multiplayer games with your friends over the phone network, and also enables you to recommend your favourite games to others.

EGE is currently supported by seven handset manufacturers, with LG, Sagem and Philips first in line to release compatible products and they’re currently available only through Orange’s shops and online store, though you’ll be better off waiting for the next generation of EGE handsets. The simultaneous multiplayer gaming feature won’t arrive until the second generation of EGE handsets, which will also boast improved 3D visual capabilities, too.

Games featuring the technology are also somewhat limited at present, though you can expect this list to grow substantially in the coming months:

• Star Wars III • Midtown Madness 3 Mobile • Zoo Tycoon 2 Mobile • It’s Mr Pants • Terminator, I’m Back • Shado Fighter • Football Fans 2005 • I-F Racing 2 • Flynn • Biocide
