Given the current economic situation and the decline in overall sales for the US games market in 2009, you'd think that things would have slowed down for the DS, which after all was launched in late 2004.

But none of it.

Perhaps thanks to its lower price point, December witnessed the second best month ever for DS sales with more than 3.3 million units of DS Lites and DSis sold, according to US retail analysis group NPD.

Lifetime sales for the various forms of Nintendo DS in the US have now topped 38.8 million units, surpassing Game Boy Advance.

In terms of software, the best selling DS game was apparently Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, which was the tenth best seller in December with more than 656,000 sold.

Quite what happened to The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, we don't know, although it was released on 7th December so would have had less time on sale and was also less likely to have been discounted and/or cheaply bundled.

"Wii, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi combined to sell more than 7 million units in the month of December alone," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing.

"Clearly there is overwhelming consumer demand for fun games, motion controls and value. This remarkable hardware sales surge presents a tremendous software opportunity for Nintendo and its thirdparty partners as we head into 2010."
