Hold onto your handhelds – BioWare, one of the best game studios in the world, has just revealed its setting up a new handheld game development group.

And in an exciting move that vindicates just how the portable systems are exciting leading developers as much as the next gen TV consoles, the company has revealed its first ever handheld game will be produced for the Nintendo DS.

The studio has previously produced a string of smash hits for PC and console, including Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire; it is now making its presence felt with Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect. There's no official word on what that first DS title will be (we suggest you begin your lobbying campaigns immediately!)

The new handheld group will be led by project director, Dan Tudge, former president and founder of indie studio Exile Interactive, who has previously worked for major publishers such as Nintendo, Microsoft, THQ, and Sega.

"As always, we are committed to creating the best story-driven games in the world, and the Nintendo DS offers us an exciting new platform to engage," said Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. "The new project offers tremendous opportunities, and we're looking for talented and passionate developers to become part of that."

Fancy a job? BioWare – listed among Canada's Top 100 Employers three years in a row – has begun actively recruiting for its new handheld team. Details of the available positions can be found at BioWare's job page.
