Arsenal FC teams up with Sony for PSP replays
Streaming video application coming in ‘next 18 months’
Ah Sony. We want to love the PSP, and use it to its fullest, but you do make it hard.
When it comes to Sony’s games division these days, some great news about the company’s floundering handheld system is always tainted by corporate heel dragging.
According to The Guardian, Arsenal FC is teaming up with Sony to build a video streaming application for the PSP that’ll allow you to view instant replays, goals and ‘contentious events’.
Hmmm, not sure about that last one (on-pitch hooliganism? Streakers? Footballer’s wives’ down-blouse shots?) but all in all it sounds like a step in the right direction for reviving a bit of interest in the superb, yet grossly unsupported, handheld console.
There’s also vague talk about connecting users during the actual match, which would presumably find use in digital taunts, chants and fan-led posturing.
But it does beg the question of why you won’t be able to stream the actual match, and of course it comes with a qualifier: the application should be with us ‘in the next 18 months’.
Waiting a year and a half isn’t very appealing; considering we’re already watching videos on our iPhones and mobiles, and other reports suggest the PSP2 will be with us by 2010.
Unless, of course, this is another small hint toward a feature of the PSP2, though with a bit of effort it’s something the current console could handle with ease.
The upshot? You might be able to watch highlights of the back end of Arsenal’s 2010 season on your PSP - assuming it hasn’t been superceded (the console and the club, that is).
