What's this? Why it's Pocket Gamer's roundup of the three best iPhone and iPad games that have gone free in the last 24 hours or so.

This instalment brings with it a mixed bag of titles. We have a gorgeous casual offering in DEO, a classic arcade-shooter in Space Inversion 2 HD, and a hardcore racing title in Ricky Carmichael's Motocross Matchup Pro.

These games could spring back to their original prices at any second, so we suggest you grab them as fast as you can.

And, if you've spotted a free title that you think everybody should play, feel free to leave it in the comments section below.

DEO (iPhone)

DEO is a gorgeous casual-strategy title set in the serenity of space, which sees you hopping between hills on a rotating level in order to “create life and revive hope”.

As your progress through the game's two vast worlds and 96 levels (90 normal and six bonus), you'll begin to construct your own planet on DEO's main menu. This will constantly be inhabited by greenery and life, based on the number of times you meet your demise.

DEO managed to bag itself a Pocket Gamer Bronze Award at review.

Space Inversion 2 HD (iPad)

Space Inversion 2 HD is a classic Space Invaders-esque arcade title that comes packing two game modes – Arcade and Classic – powerful weapons, shields, and power-ups, and support for Ion Audio's iCade controller peripheral.

You can take the fight to wave after wave of enemies using manual, semi-auto, and auto-fire attacks, and boost Space Inversion 2's number of game modes and graphical styles through in-app purchases.

Apple's social gaming network Game Center is on-board to provide leaderboards, achievements, and bragging rights.

Ricky Carmichael's Motocross Matchup Pro (Universal)

Ricky Carmichael's Motocross Matchup Pro only hit the App Store yesterday, but it's already free thanks to the Free App A Day initiative.

The racer tasks you with going up against online competitors around a selection and indoor and outdoor national tracks, pulling off sick tricks using gesture-based controls, upgrading the stats of both your bike and your rider, and unlocking achievements.

Ricky Carmichael's Motocross Matchup Pro takes full advantage of the iPhone 4's Retina display and the iPad 2's extra graphical grunt. You can also play on your big TV using Apple's AV Component cable.
