Basketball’s popularity has been constantly increasing with new leagues, better finances, more competition, and a lot of other factors. At the same time, technological advancement has brought about the advent of augmented reality and the metaverse. What happens when you put both of these together?

Niantic, a company that needs no introduction when it comes to making AR games thanks to the wild success of Pokémon Go, has teamed up with HypGames, the NBA and NBPA to create NBA All-World, a first-of-its-kind real-world mobile game that will take place in the metaverse. It will be an officially licensed title that is free-to-play with players being able to make the best use of the geolocation system to find other interested players to build a team and challenge each other. All World will feature custom apparel so players look smart as well.

Speaking about the game, Marcus Matthews, Senior Producer at Niantic, said: “NBA All-World represents an industry first in sports games, as an original, real-world mobile game that will appeal to casual and core NBA fans alike. We’re creating and designing a game that empowers players to represent where they’re from and showcase their individual style.”

Adding to this, Matt Holt, Head of Consumer Products at the NBA said: “Through our partnership with Niantic, NBA All-World will provide fans across the globe the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into the energy and excitement of the NBA. Evident in the name of the game itself, we look forward to engaging with our fans around the world through this immersive experience.”

While we don’t have a concrete release date for NBA All-World, interested players can pre-register for the game on the official website. Once the game is available in their country, they will be notified. Additionally, all the early birds will have the opportunity to immerse themselves into this brand new AR web experience with their own codename that can be used during the global launch. Also, keep checking NBA All-World’s Facebook and Twitter handles.
