Outisde of the Guitar Hero franchise, Google Play has never been known for its wide selection of rhythm games.

Developer Pixel Punch is looking to add some much needed, er, punch to the selection of Android music games with the release of its hybrid action/rhythm game, Music Samurai.

Taking its aesthetic inspiration from animated TV shows like Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai, Music Samurai delivers a hack-and-slash take on traditional rhythm game mechanics by allowing you to slice up opponents as you dash through levels.

Chanbara on the run

The plot of Music Samurai kicks off when a portly and evil samurai waddles up and eats the hero's bowl of rice. Throwing caution and due legal process to the wind, the heroic samurai charges after the chubby thief to exact vengeance.

Along the way, his path of revenge takes him through villages and towns where he must fight off evil thugs in time to the music.

Music Samurai allows adds a bit of endless running to the mix by allowing players to choose between 'Story' and 'Infinite' modes, with the latter challenging players to run for as long as they can on any unlocked level.
