Gameloft is preparing to unleash a beefed-up 3D version of its Midnight Pool game, which was one of the best mobile pool titles of 2005 in its original 2D incarnation.

The game will include three sets of rules – US 8-ball, UK 8-ball and 9-ball – and takes place against four different pool-hall backgrounds: Alabama, Florida, Texas and Las Vegas. Happily, RAWK anthem Sweet Home Alabama is still the game's theme tune too.

There will be arcade, instant play and trick-shot challenge modes, and four available characters, each with their own personalities. But it's the swish 3D graphics which will be the big pulling factor, and from our screenshots you can see how well the game is shaping up.

Here's the rub – you'll need a decent handset to play it. The game will only be available for Nokia phones running the Symbian operating system, which means the 7610, 6620, 6600, 6630, 3230, 6260, 6670, 6680 and 6681.

It's out soon (click 'Track it!' above to keep abreast of our coverage) and will be accompanied by an equally nifty 3D update of Gameloft's Midnight Bowling game, which we'll be previewing later this week.
