Love Live! School Idol Festival prepares to close its doors and end service in a few months

The hit rhythm game Love Live! School Idol Festival, adapted from the multimedia project that is Love Live!, is officially shutting down service on March 31st per an announcement from developer KLab Inc. This being one of the most beloved rhythm games available for mobile devices, and based on an even more beloved property like Love Live!, this may come as a shock, but there’s a simple reason for this abrupt ending to one of the highest-rated games out there.

We’ll touch on the reason down the road, but for now, let’s go over what we’re losing in a few months, as something as big as Love Live! School Idol Festival deserves to be recognised. This was a beloved game in just about every region, but was especially successful in Japan, as that’s where Love Live! is at its biggest in terms of popularity.

Featuring a loveable cast of high school girls who moonlight as idols, or musical performers, School Idol Festival was full of stories for each member of the cast, offering up a way to get attached to your favourite idol. The rhythm gameplay was a simple tap-dots sort of deal, but it worked excellently and was easy enough to get into that anyone could dig their teeth into it.

So, you might be asking, if this was so popular and great, why would it shut down? Well, typically this news is sad and a letdown for any mobile game, but given that KLab very recently announced the Love Live! School Idol Festival sequel, I think this is likely why we’re saying goodbye to this one. They likely don’t want to split their work between the older version of their newest project, so I’d bet we’ll even see more about School Idol Festival 2 come that March 31st shutdown date.

Till then, you can still experience everything there is to offer within Love Live! School Idol Festival right now for free at either of the links below. In the meantime, stay tuned for more information on that sequel as it’s handed out.
