Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is an upcoming mixed reality racer from the developers of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Velan Studios, the folks behind the mixed reality game Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, are back with another racer that looks to meld the virtual and real world together. It's called Hot Wheels: Rift Rally and will release for iOS, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on March 14th.

So how does it work? There are two ways to play Hot Wheels: Rift Rally. Campaign mode involves setting up the physical Rift Gates that come in the box around your home. Once ready, the game will overlay virtual elements to your homemade track. Alternatively, you can forgo the use of the gates in Stunt mode and chain together drifts, burnouts and other tricks to net yourself some rewards. Not only will the software transform your home into a Hot Wheels track, but it will also change the look of the Chameleon RC. You can choose from 22 different core cars and then tweak the colours, meaning there are 140 variants on offer. The base cars include numerous fan favourites, including Twin Mill, Bone Shaker, Mach Speeder and Gotta Go.

Aside from cosmetic changes in-game, the changes you make to your vehicles will be reflected by the Chameleon RC in real life. For example, if you make a tweak that increases how quickly your car accelerates, that will be reflected by the Chameleon as it speeds across your living room or kitchen floor.

Aside from speeding around your home, Hot Wheels: Rift Rally also promises plenty of mini-games, puzzles and other challenges to complete. Doing so will unlock additional vehicles and customisation options. The game also offers solo and co-op options.

The software will be free to download from the App Store and PlayStation Store, while the physical component of Hot Wheels: Rift Rally includes the Chameleon RC car, four Rift Gates and a charging cable. This is the standard edition and will cost $129.99. The deluxe version, which costs $149.99, will include a special edition black and gold Chameleon RC car and a limited edition McLaren Senna Hot Wheels die-cast car. If interested, you can pre-order it ahead of the March 14th release from the official website.
