Hitman Sniper: The Shadows received a new trailer during Square Enix Presents

Back in March, Square Enix announced Hitman Sniper Assassins for both iOS and Android. That was merely a working title, however. Today they have announced it will be called Hitman Sniper: The Shadows alongside revealing a few other details and a brand new trailer. However, there is still no word on an exact release date beyond a 2021 launch.

Hitman Sniper: The Shadows promises an entirely new and original story within the Hitman universe that takes place after Agent 47 has disappeared. It follows the titular Shadows, a talented group of assassins instructed by Diana Burwood. A new criminal network has popped up, and it will be up to this unit of assassins to take down the threat. The team includes Soji, Kiya, Kolzak, Knight, and Stone.

Players will need to eliminate a plethora of high profile targets, but they will have to carry out the assassinations in secret. This means manipulating the environment and using it to their advantage to isolate their quarry before taking them out. It looks to build upon its predecessor's foundations but won't act as a sequel to Hitman Sniper.

Discussing the game, Fahad Khan, lead game designer at Square Enix Montréal, said: “We were given an amazing opportunity to extend the Hitman universe, not only by delivering a fresh take on the world, but also a cast of new playable characters.”

They added: “Our new protagonists all have unique backstories and different styles that could turn into player style, amplifying their play experience, creativity and strategic choices when approaching a contract.”

Hitman Sniper: The Shadows will release on the App Store and Google Play later this year. It will be a free-to-play game with in-app purchases.
