It is a truth universally acknowledged that no app store can contain too many match-three games.

Of course, the wider issue of how many match-three games even the most hardcore genre fan actually needs remains to be calculated.

Still, Fruit Frenzy, the debut from UK developer White Bat Games seems to be a well presented, if not wholly original take on the genre, should that audience be experiencing any withdrawal symptoms when it comes to 2011 releases.

Its key element is the way it constrains your gameplay as you can only move one row of the fruit-filled grid laterally. You can move all the columns up and down however, enabling you to build symbol matches as you move the various fruits around the grid.

As with all such games, combo matches are key to gaining a good score, while if you can get a match-five of the symbol displayed at the bottom of the screen, you get a special bonus.

There are three modes: the endless Arcade mode, a three minute Time Attack mode, and a Puzzle mode, consisting of 20 examples. High scores and achievements are supported via OpenFeint.

Fruit Frenzy is available now for iPhone and iPad, priced 99c, €0.79 or 59p.
