We find ourselves in a political apocalypse this morning, electoral reform a vague possibility once the politicians finish choosing their new teams, like a school gym class.

Oh well. Time to start stocking up on free apps before the country collapses into 28 Days Later-style anarchy and playing games on your iPhone is demoted to being only slightly less important than staying alive.

Stop the undead

So in that spirit, might we direct you to Zombie Defense in order to brush up your sharpshooting skills. Unlike other games of this ilk, you don’t have to repeatedly tap the screen to fire, that action instead automated.

Setting up defences and positioning your survivors in the calm before each night is wonderfully atmospheric, and as the zombie hordes become ever more dense over the three nights in the lite version, you can lament the voting public’s decisions in your final minutes.

Drive-time

Of course, looting will be an equally important knack to finesse, and Car Jack Streets, from a group of ex-Grand Theft Auto coders, is just the ticket. Still free from its hit and run with FreeAppADay, the game will teach you how to hotwire vehicles and put criminal activity to good use.

If all this is a little too dystopian for you, though, you may need a pick me up. The ever so slightly odd KipMonkey (a match-3 puzzler featuring our simian relatives) will take your mind off of the end of the world as we know it.

Space - final frontier
There are also two space-based games going free.

Tower defence game Sentinel: Earth Defense 2 has just gone free for a few days, while Freeverse's ambitious combat and trading game Warpgate has been released in freemium versions for both iPhone and iPad, which give you two hours of free gaming before you're asked to cough up some cash to get the full game. Of course, the Trawler Report will top you up with some more free games, and don’t forget to download the free podcast (this week hosted by myself) whilst we’re still broadcasting...

Good luck out there people, and may Pocket God be with you...
