Ex-Insomniac Games developer Thomas Hoeg and his ByteSize Games team has released its debut title FlipShip on iPhone.

This Ikaruga-style shoot-'em-up introduces a fun new risk / reward mechanic: your ship can only destroy ships of the corresponding colour. Shooting down spacecraft of the opposite colour will destroy you.

At any stage, though, you can 'flip' your ship, reversing its colour and allowing you to pursue the previously 'untouchable' foes. The catch is that doing so resets your combo bonus.

Weighing it up

"The player is constantly making the decision to wager their current points against the potential for future ones, and that keeps the experience tense and exciting even after they’ve logged many hours of playing time," Hoeg says.

FlipShip will ultimately retail for £1.49 / $1.99, but to celebrate its launch, the developer is making it available for one week only at 69p / 99c.

Check out the trailer below to see how the action unfolds, and if you’re still unsure about FlipShip, why not download the Lite version.
