Ex-Insomniac Games developer Thomas Hoeg and his new studio ByteSize Games is bringing Ikaruga-esque arcade space shooter FlipShip to the App Store on September 27th.

Your sole aim in FlipShip is to rack up a blistering high score by destroying wave after wave of enemies. The way you achieve this, though, is quite unique.

For starters, you can only destroy enemy ships of the same colour as your craft, with foes of opposite colours posing as constant threats to your success.

You can 'flip' the colour of your ship at anytime by simply tapping on your device's screen, and although this banks the points you've earned from your destroyed foes, it also resets your combo level back to zero.

Blast off

“The player is constantly making the decision to wager their current points against the potential for future ones, and that keeps the experience tense and exciting even after they’ve logged many hours of playing time,” Hoeg says.

FlipShip has been approved by Apple, and is set to touch down in the App Store on September 27th for 69p / 99c, before rocketing to £1.49 / $1.99 a week later.

A Lite version of the game offering "one ship, one life, one score, and no other limits" will also be available.
