Match hexagons, save kingdom in Fall of Atlantis

Ever since Puzzle Quest, there have been plenty of generally imaginative games that have mixed up different genres. Maybe we're all getting a bit bored of match-three puzzlers though.

Thankfully, the latest game from Swedish developer Spearhead takes its inspiration from less popular material. Fall of Atlantis takes the good old fashioned 2D sidescrolling platformer and mixes it up with Bust-a-Move (aka Puzzle Bobble).

We're all sinking

In terms of plot, you take on the role of Atlas, the King of Atlantis, trying to save your beloved kingdom from destruction.

In terms of gameplay, you wander and jump around the world, pausing only to fire coloured hexagons to make groups of three or more (there's a bit of match-three in there after all), and hence overcome obstacles, mythological creature baddies, and bosses. There's also a dedicated Puzzle mode for those who aren't so keen on the adventuring.

It seems like an interesting combination, and one that stands out visually thanks to its retro art-style. We'll see how it plays when it's released on July 30th.
