Sega is making a DS House of the Dead spin-off designed to teach Japanese gamers English, according to the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (translated by 1UP.com).

English of the Dead will have players fending off packs of zombies by translating Japanese words that pop up on the screen into English and inputting them using a touchscreen keyboard.

Obviously our first thought when hearing this news was how brilliant it would be to have a Typing of the Dead game for DS. But that was swiftly followed by the realisation that it would probably be rubbish without a proper keyboard to desperately bang words into before a zombie gets you by the throat.

You never know, though – we'd love to be proved wrong.

Unfortunately there seem to be no plans to bring the game to the west and, even if it does, Sega will probably have to take the translating of another language out of the equation because everyone knows Brits don't speak languages other than their own.

In the meantime, anyone in possession of a spot of Japanese might find an imported copy of English of the Dead is a good way to brush up on their translation skills. If we'd been allowed to spill zombie blood while learning languages at school, we might have paid a lot more attention in class.
