As first spotted by GamerBraves, Detention, one of the finest horror games of the last decade, has today crept its way onto the App Store and Google Play. Red Candle Games’ deeply unsettling tale of a school, its students, and the intense harm of living under martial law released back in 2017 to much critical acclaim.

It’s a 2D Silent Hill-like horror game, where you’ll explore every nook and cranny of a sprawling school in 1960s Taiwan, gradually uncovering a troubling mystery as you go. There be monsters here, of course, but Detention is very much part of the Amnesia school of running away and hiding.

Not since Lone Survivor have I felt so unnerved when playing a 2D horror game, and I reckon a large part of that comes from Detention’s stellar sound design. Mix in some squirm-inducing visuals and a story which creeps up and devastates you by the end, and you’ve got yourself a horror game for the ages.

Devotion, Red Candle Games’ latest title, was removed from online stores after the studio became the victim of targeted abuse, with the game itself being review bombed, as a result of the inclusion of a poster which read “Xi Jinping Winnie-the-Pooh moron”. The famously thin-skinned Xi Jinping has often been compared to the animated bear, which doesn’t seem at all fair to the loveable Pooh. I can only hope the porting of Detention to mobile means that there’s still a chance of Devotion returning to Steam.

If you’re even the slightest bit interested in the genre or are down for a genuinely unshakeable experience, I’d implore you to give this one a go. You’ll find Detention available for download now over on the App Store and Google Play for $3.99.
