A new indie 2D platformer/Metroidvania combination, Cave Ranger, has launched for iOS. Courtesy of Cascadia Games LLC, this new adventure sees you embark upon a spaghetti western-inspired journey through a massive system of caves, wherein you will rescue those in need, do battle against dangerous wildlife and outlaws, and find items and gear as you dig deeper and deeper!

Cave Ranger clearly wears the inspiration of excellent retro games such as Cave Story or even Castlevania on its sleeve, even using that 8-bit art style that older games had. Combined with the sprite work and metroidvania nature, this is one that wants to bring you back to the good ol’ days of gaming.

When the Bitty Gang, the antagonists of the game, steals your town’s finances, you take off after them and hunt them down through the caves to save the town’s future. Upon entering, all you’ll have is the pistol on your hip, the whip in your hand, and the hat on your head. With all of this gear, you’ll find your way through this absurdly complex system of caves and come upon new riches, new gear, and new enemies until you eventually find the treasure that is rightfully yours.

Combat is just like other Metroidvanias, using a projectile-based and platformer-esque style of gameplay. You’ll dodge around slow-moving projectiles and jump here and there to avoid melee attacks, all while throwing out your own. You know what you’re in for here if you've played the genre. It’s likely some of the gear that can be found later in the game will change things up, but those are surprises for you to find for yourself!

If you’d like to do so, you can purchase Cave Ranger for only $1.99 at the link below!
