Out of nowhere, giant of the mobile games industry Supercell has soft-launched its latest game. No, it's not another entry in the battle royale or auto chess genres but a match-3 puzzler set in the Hay Day universe. Bet you didn't see that one coming.

Hay Day Pop is described as a "match-and-solve puzzle game" where you'll complete simple match-3 challenges and collect neat rewards for use in creating your very own farm. As was the case with the original Hay Day, you'll plant crops, decorate your new home, and tend to your many cute animals.

There are special tools and boosters to utilize along the way, softening the many stresses of life on a digital farm. Achieving a sizable win streak will net you bonuses and what are known as "Star Rewards".

There's also a social aspect to gameplay, with you having the ability to meet and play with other players to rise up the leaderboards together.

Fan reaction to the announcement over on Reddit has been mixed. That said, it's important to note that most folks – myself included – still haven't had a chance to give it a go.

Supercell's last game, Rush Wars, ended up being cancelled while still in development due to its repetitive nature and slight deficiency of fun.

Dave previewed it last year, finding it to be mostly solid though unremarkable. Could Hay Day Pop face the same fate? Perhaps… but it's important to note that it seems designed to appeal to more casual players than many of Supercell's most popular and acclaimed titles, meaning the commenters grumbling on Reddit about it not being another Brawl Stars likely aren't the target demo.

It's currently unclear as to when we can expect a global launch, assuming it survives Supercell's rigorous assessment. Those based in Australia, New Zealand, or Finland can play Hay Day Pop in soft-launch right now on iOS and Android. More countries will gain access at a later date.
