The sequel to Dragon Fantasy, a homage to retro JRPGs, suddenly came out on iOS today

Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice came out on iOS today and there was no warning. Yes, we're as surprised as you.

This is, of course, the sequel to Dragon Fantasy, which came to iOS back in 2011. It was well supported all the way up until two years ago when it got upgraded to 16-bit graphics from 8-bit graphics.

Last we heard about either of these games is that publisher Choice Provisions would be bringing them both to 3DS, Wii U, and Steam.

Anyway, if you don't know, both games are homages and satire of retro JRPGs in look and in how they play.

In this sequel you once again join middle-aged warrior Ogden and the heroes of Westeria as they battle across a fantasy land.

Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice

We actually reviewed The Black Tome of Ice when it came out for PS Vita (and PS3) back in 2013 under the title Dragon Fantasy Book II.

It got a Silver Award, with our reviewer saying that "warts and all, it's impossible to not like Dragon Fantasy Book II if you can recall a time when Square and Enix were two separate companies."

If you want to buy Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice for iOS it costs £3.99 / $4.99 on the App Store.
