Apple has announced that its Game Center will be coming to the Mac operating system in the soon-to-be-released OS X Mountain Lion.

With 130 million mobile Game Center users on iOS, there is no denying the popularity of Apple’s social gaming system, although we wish Apple would give the network a bit more love in terms of features and the ability to change the green baize theme.

The addition of Game Center to Mountain Lion will allow true cross platform play between iOS users and desktop/laptop users - something that developers of multiplayer games will be keen to support.

Go head-to-head

Of particular interest are the modifications to Game Center itself. While the user interface and familiar green background remain unchanged, Game Center will now support both head-to-head and turn-based gaming across platforms.

Apple will release Mountain Lion in July of 2012, and has announced a $19.99 pricetag for the upgrade.
