Kazuo Hirai, Sony's president- and CEO-in-waiting, has hinted that the Japanese company may be looking into porting the PS Vita's operating system to other mobile and tablet devices.

According to website AV Watch, Hirai told reporters at a recent Q&A session that Sony doesn't want its punters to forget that the PS Vita's OS is a mobile platform, not just a gaming platform.

Sony's senior vice president Yoshio Matsumoto also chimed in: "If you're asking if we've made it in a way that's expandable, so that it's possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices - it is possible."

"That doesn't mean that we're applying it to smartphones and tablets at this point in time, but it's been designed with expandability in mind," he said.

Move to mobile

It's inevitable that Sony will release more PlayStation-certified phones and tablets in the coming months and years. Whether they're powered by Google's Android or Vita OS, however, remains to be seen.

When questioned about the feasibility of porting popular smartphone apps to the Vita platform, Sony's deputy president Kunimasa Suzuki revealed that the PlayStation Suite will be expanded for this purpose.

"That's exactly why we're going to be putting energy into building up PlayStation Suite this year," he stated.
