The pace of smartphone technology doesn’t show any signs of slowing down at the moment, with companies one-upping the last model of handset on a monthly basis.

However, while HTC and others keep announcing faster machines, the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II remains elusive.

Rumours this week suggest that the South Korean company may have been keeping the phone back to ensure it comes out as the very fastest on release, as it appears the firm has replaced the original 1GHz dual-core chip with a new 1.2GHz processor.

The information comes, strangely, from the Samsung’s Estonian office’s Facebook page, which either means someone mistyped a memo or someone’s getting the sack.

If true, the new 1.2GHz machine puts the machine on par with HTC’s latest dual-core machine, the HTC Pyramid/Sensation, which should land some time in spring.

The Galaxy S II, on the other hand, is likely to arrive in shops in early May.
