Though little is currently known regarding its intentions, social gaming start up Wild Needle has acquired a total of $3 million in funding rounds, TechCrunch reports.

The developer – which, on its website, claims it is currently operating in "super sneaky stealth mode" - has Playdom co-founder Rick Thompson on its books as an executive.

No boundaries

Thompson moved on from Playdom following its $763 million buyout by Disney back in July, but it would now appear he already has his finger back in the social gaming pie, with Wild Needle pitching itself as a studio designed to push the genre's boundaries.

"We're working on some great ideas for the next generation of social games for mobile devices," the firm says on its website.

"After all, a mobile device is so much more than a portable game player. What if mobile games were thoughtful, immersive, and filled with unexpected delight? What if they made you laugh out loud?"

Further digging by TechCrunch reveals Wild Needle also has co-founder of VC firm Shasta Ventures listed as its director, with Shasta believed to be the firm's main investor as a result.
