Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on PSP setting sales records in Japan

Japan’s insatiable hunger for Monster Hunter titles shows no side of abating, with the latest PSP title setting new sales records.

Shipping 2 million copies in first week, with 1.7 of those sold, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd has flown off the shelves.

These sales also contribute towards the 15 million PSP Monster Hunter games (of which there are three) sold so far

In a statement made today Capcom stated they believed “the combination of returning fans and all-new ones allowed us to ship a record-breaking two million units in the first week.”

A sequel to Monster Hunter Freedom 2, this third instalment in the PSP series is another hack-and-slash open-world adventure.

Any additions, such as a new creature named White Rabbit Beast Urukususu and improved equipment customisation, seem to be merely cosmetic- this looks much the same as every other entry so far in the series.

Good news for the Monster Hunter devotees in Japan then, but possibly not for many in the West, where the series repetitive nature regularly receives a lukewarm reception from players and reviewers alike.

A release date for Monster Hunter Freedom 3 in Europe or the US is yet to be confirmed.
