New iPod touch packs Retina display, two cameras, A4 chip
Thinner fourth-generation model available next week
Apple met expectations today with the announcement of a fourth-generation iPod touch featuring a high resolution screen, two cameras, and smaller form factor.
CEO Steve Jobs proudly unveiled the new iPod touch, highlighting the clarity and detail of the Retina display, which comes to iPod touch after first debuting in iPhone 4.
Rumours of a camera were laid to rest when it was revealed that the device bears two camera, one front-facing and the other outward for high definition video. FaceTime calling will be supported.
Inside the device is the powerful A4 chip, which has made iPhone 4 a speedy dream and now puts iPod touch on par.
Perhaps most impressive is the reduction in size. Previous iPod touch models astounded with their small form, but this new iteration is even more diminutive as you can see from the image.
Three versions will be offered beginning next week: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399. International pricing and availability has not yet been announced.
The fourth-generation iPod touch will be available the second week of September in the US.
