Toy Story 3: Woody's Wild Ride

Pixar knows exactly what it's doing.

While it might be the kids up and down the land that have Woody wallpaper and Buzz Lightyear dolls strewn across their bedroom floors, it's the parents who stump up the cash when Christmas and birthdays roll into town. The old folks are the ones with the power.

As such, every Pixar movie ever has been pitched with adults in mind, and this year's Toy Story comeback is no different.

What a shame, then, that Disney's cash-in here is so comparatively narrow in its vision. This platformer-cum-racer is so simple in its design that anyone with an ounce of skill will breeze through it.

As the title suggests, this is not a straight conversion of the movie in question.

Instead, Disney has opted to put together a separate offshoot, handing you control of both Woody and Buzz one level after another as they dodge a series of obstacles and set out to pick up as many sheriff badges as possible.

Strip back the PR and Toy Story 3: Woody's Wild Ride falls back on three things: dodging, jumping, and shooting.

Whether riding with Woody on horseback or flying skywards with Buzz, your main priority it to move up and down (with keys '2' and '8') to avoid the scores of obstacles that stand in your path as the game charges you automatically from left to right.

With Woody, many of said blockers can be leapt over, a tap of the '5' key enough to cause his transport to leap temporarily into the air.

Buzz Lightyear's equivalent is to fire his laser - a particularly handy instrument given that his foes are a touch more menacing.

Indeed, some of his stages come with a boss of sorts, firing at a series of UFOs that follow a fairly strict pattern of movement the order of the day.

In truth, that's about exciting as Toy Story 3: Woody's Wild Ride gets.

While each new level is undoubtedly more of a challenge than the last, their design and implementation never extends beyond the basic, with Woody's latest proving to be a less than wild companion than many might have hoped.
