Part of large Maemo update

Remember the N900? It hasn’t been out that long, but you could be forgiven for thinking it had, such has been Nokia’s apparent disinterest in the device.

We at PG love the tubby Maemo-powered oddity. It’s like the crazy, borderline genius of the family – flawed, awkward, but unmistakably brilliant and capable of so much more if only it were given the right support…

Sorry, I’m welling up. Anyway, in a rather unexpected move, Nokia is releasing an OS update for the device.

Version 1.2, which is out today in the UK and elsewhere tomorrow, features a host of updates that make the N900 a far more complete everyday phone. There are improvements to Email, Ovi Maps and internet browsing (you can now do it in portrait view), and some new additions in the shape of Facebook IM chat and video calling.

But the really exciting news is the release of three new 3D games for the device - Zen Bound, Kroll, and Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster - which should appear when Ovi Store updates on Thursday.

All three games are incredibly impressive graphically, and were well received by us when they were released on iPhone.

Zen Bound, in particular, won a rare Pocket Gamer Platinum Award for its uniquely relaxing brand of puzzling. It’s a simple case of wrapping up a selection of three dimensional objects with a single stretch of string.

Kroll is a lush action-platformer from Digital Legends, which sees you hacking your way through nine fantasy-themed levels.

Finally, Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster has you guiding a rollercoaster through a number of implausibly arranged tracks, your aim being to strike a balance between fun and safety.

Each game should serve to show off the N900’s 3D graphical prowess nicely, and will hopefully signal an increase in the steady drip of high quality games coming to the device.

Another part of the update will see an Angry Birds level pack made available on Ovi Store.
