In shock news, highly speculative sales figures were announced for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS (in codename only).

The announcement that the Kyoto-based games giant will sell 5 million of its new portable game console wasn't made by Nintendo though.

Through a combination of sleuthing and (perhaps) guesswork, analyst Jesse Divnich of Electronic Entertainment Design And Research or EEDAR for short, commented that “according to their expected Nintendo DS and 3DS sales (they combine both sales into one category)... Nintendo is expecting the 3DS to sell 5 million units by March 2011.”

He calculated this from Nintendo's forecasts in its recent financial report.

Jesse also suggests the company is “likely to announce that the 3DS will be available in at least two regions beginning in November 2010.”

You may wish to take these predictions with a pinch of 3D salt.

Either way, we’re guaranteed to find out more at this year’s E3, which kicks off on June 15.
