Square Enix’s iPhone re-imagining of its famous NES RPG Final Fantasy has risen majestically to the top of the iPhone sales charts, deposing the astonishingly successful Plants vs Zombies in the process.

The 8-bit adventure retails for $8.99/£5.49, which puts it squarely in 'premium' app territory but that didn’t dissuade thousands of gamers from gleefully downloading it when it launched last week.

Final Fantasy II, which was released alongside its arguably more famous predecessor, fared rather less well. This is understandable when you consider that most people will start with the first game before moving onto the second: it dropped in at 9th place but could rise up the chart in the coming weeks.

EA’s Monopoly has passed Go and collected £200 by scoring second position while PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies has dropped to number three.

At the other end of the scale EA’s Rock Band is holding on for dear life at number 10.

Damien's mum hoped he would grow out of playing silly video games and gain respectable employment. Perhaps become a teacher or a scientist, that kind of thing. Needless to say she now weeps openly whenever anyone asks how her son's getting on these days.
