64GB iPhone and 128GB iPod touch coming?

It's possible thanks to Toshiba

Currently the flash memory chips used in our iPhones and iPod touches limit storage to 32GB and 64GB respectively (the iPhone only has space for one chip, unlike the MP3 player, hence the difference).

However, thanks to the availability of a new embedded NAND flash memory chip made by Toshiba, the possibility for another major jump in storage size is here. Two of the new little storage beasts would allow an astonishing 128GB of memory on the iPod touch and 64GB on the iPhone.

Unfortunately, the release schedule for Apple means we may have to wait till Autumn next year to enjoy the higher capacity units, assuming Apple even starts buying the chips. There is a chance it could be coupled with the new camera equipped iPod touch, so an earlier release is also possible.

Either way, hard drives in Apple devices may just be a thing of the past.
