Sony has been careful not to cause the Osbourne Effect with its handheld hardware sales by assuring us that the PSPgo will continue to share shelf space with the PSP-3000, though speculation has been rife that the older model will be phased out nonetheless.

And now a new rumour has surfaced on the N4G forums suggesting this will indeed be the case - only it won't be the PSPgo that replaces the PSP-3000. It'll be a UMD-equipped PSP-4000.

This rumour is nothing more than a user post at the moment, so it's not something to invest too much excitement in. However, the poster, Super_Secret, does seem to have some knowledge of the inner workings of Sony, since he previously leaked the information on the PS3 Slim and was proven correct.

"Who said the 3000 wasn't being phased out?" Super_Secret asks in the forum post. "It will be and sooner than you realise. However, the PSP Go isn't what's replacing it. The 4000 is. And yes, it will have a UMD drive. And similar to the PS3 "slim", it's nothing to actually get excited about."

John Koller has previously reaffirmed Sony's positive position on PSP physical media, as did Kaz Hirai in a recent interview with The Times, insisting that Sony remains committed to the UMD format (except when it comes to the PSPgo - there are no plans to accommodate previous game purchases on the new hardware, despite the electronics giant dallying over answering rumours about free downloads).

So, assuming for the moment that the PSP-4000 is real, chances are it's just going to be a cursory hardware update to level out some of the specs between the old style console and the PSPgo.

But if we chose to let our fantasies run free for a moment, given that the PSPgo hasn't really blown our skirts up yet (not at that price, anyway) what sort of changes would you like to see in an 'old style' PSP?

The internal flash storage? A smaller form factor? Bluetooth?

Your thoughts on a postcard.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
