We’ve been hearing about new application stores springing up all over the place ever since the iPhone made Apple richer than God and J.K. Rowling combined, but most have been device specific. Apple, Palm, WinMo, Nokia, BlackBerry - they tend to place the manufacturer in charge.

But now an independent mobile app store has been launched by Javaground to deliver games directly to the consumer. In many respects, Xpressed Mobile Marketplace is actually a portal, but it does offer some pretty appealing features for the game hungry mobile user.

“Xpressed provides consumers with unparalled value and efficient content discovery which had always been a challenge in the industry. Xpressed, with its Xpress Suite, is much more than a mobile store; it’s an App Store with a self-publishing platform for all developers and publishers, big and small,” says Alex Kral, CEO and co-founder of Javaground.

Both a website and WAP site get you access to the games, and there’s even an on-device J2ME client available, and the community features allow you to blog about your favourite games or playing habits, should you feel like sharing.

All games are offered with an automatically created demo, or you can play online through an emulator, which s a nice touch. Developers set their own prices, or you can take out a monthly subscription to get access to the entire catalogue.

Check it out over at Xpressed Mobile Marketplace.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
