Check mate chess mate, Fritz & Chesster is coming to DS

There's a great computer game to be made about chess. Sometimes, at the dog-end of a lazy week we imagine that the sleeping giant of the games industry Demis Hassabis will awake, wearing his crown as the lord of the Mind Sports Olympiad, and make a game that will combine the cut and thrust of those black and white squares with the thrust and cut of the actual chess champions.

A virtual Bobby Fischer will shamble into view, spitting cornflakes from his beard (as well as the odd burst of anti-semitism). More positively he'll teach you the Nimzo-Indian Defence.

His arch enemy Boris Spassky will appear too, but he's a nice guy so won't feature much. Karpov and Kasparov will bitch and kick at each other under the table, and then have huge discussions about Russian politics.

Both of them will 'accidentally' knock glasses of water into Deep Blue, causing its IBM handlers great distress.

One day, this game will be made, but in the meantime we'll just have to make do with Learn to Play Chess with Fritz & Chesster.

Based around the Fritz computer chess engine, the kid-friendly series, already out on PC, is now being released on DS.

The format is that the various moves and strategies of the chess board are slowly revealed through a chess-themed adventure.

So, together with Prince Fritz and his cousin Bianca, you'll learn about chess and then test and increase your knowledge in various training situations and animated exercises such as sumo wrestling, pleasantville pawn whopping and toilet bowl smashing.

But the end goal, of course, is to take on and conquer King Black. There's also be a two player versus mode using the DS's wireless connection.

Learn to Play Chess with Fritz & Chesster DS is due to be released on 6 February.
