Russian developer Elephant Games – responsible for several low-key PC titles to date – announced today it has become an authorised DS developer and is ready to unveil its first project for the handheld.

Way In Dusk is described as a 3D action adventure with a guardian angel lead character who goes by the name of St John. Immediately, travelling the world as a guardian angel makes it sound a bit like Quantum Leap – one of our favourite TV programmes of all time – which is almost enough to make us place our pre-order now.

The rest of the game's press release (which reads a bit like a review and ends with the summation: "Way In Dusk makes a great action game. It deserves to be in collection of every Nintendo DS gamer" – we'll be the judges of this, thank you) describes how the game takes place between a real and astral world.

This astral world can be entered whenever you please, and offers the ability to see things not visible in the real world, such as weapons and vital powers. You can also flip into the astral world to sneak up on enemies, switching back when you're right behind them. Combat involves shooting and various acrobatic close-up moves.

Your actual goal, as an employee of the Special Department of Heaven Office, is to visit a place called Hollow City – a post-nuclear metropolis infected with sorcery – and rid it of its monsters. Unless this has been mistranslated, these monsters have mutated from both humans and cars.

This fight will apparently reach an ultimatum where your game hero must choose between life and death. (We might humbly suggest the former, given that we are not as au fait with the latter.)

The action's viewed in first- or third-person – you can switch between the two – and there's apparently even some Matrix style bullet-time shooting in there, as well as support for four-player multiplayer matches.

The visuals are described as cell-shaded and comic book style. You can check them out for yourself in the four screenshots that accompany the announcement.

As yet, a release date hasn't been confirmed, but the game has apparently reached alpha stage, so could be with us in a matter of months. Expect more updates on this intriguing title as we get them.
