Roguelike fans: listen up.

If you loved 868-HACK and share a similar passion for Hoplite, then forthcoming iOS game Amber Halls is your next must-play title. Trust.

However, I will say it may lack some of the replay value of those two aforementioned games.

Cast iron

Played on a grid and in turns, Amber Halls has you in the role of a caster trying to work his way through a very dangerous series of rooms collecting as many gems as possible.

Like in 868-HACK, you can attack enemies from any distance with your fireballs in Amber Halls. Well, so long as they are vertically or horizontally in line with you.

What makes Amber Halls stand out, though, is that it resembles some sort of procedurally generated Sokoban puzzler. This means that you can drag items with you through each room.

Amber Halls

In the tutorial, you're told to push a fire trap with you to aid in the killing of enemies. You just tap it to ignite the squares around it. It'll hurt you, too, mind, if you're not careful.

I've not played enough of Amber Halls yet to tell you anything more than the basics. But I've died quite a few times already on account of not moving carefully enough and not making effective use of those items.

I'm pleased to say that the enemies have different movement patterns and behaviour patterns. Some even respawn after a few turns.

Safe to repeat, then, that Amber Halls is for anyone who likes 868-HACK and Hoplite. If that's you, be sure to pick Amber Halls up on March 13th from the App Store.
