Acclaimed developer SEGA has revealed the release date for their highly anticipated upcoming bullet hell RPG 404 Game Reset. Due out April 25th for Japanese gamers, this new project sees you venturing into a digital-themed world to duke it out with mysterious monsters using classic shoot-em-up mechanics mixed in with RPG progression and an interesting story to boot.

Let’s get one thing out of the way before we dig further into 404 Game Reset. This project is developed by SEGA, who themselves are legendary and need no introduction, but what makes this truly interesting beyond just that and who they are collaborating with; JRPG developer Yoko Taro.

In case you’re not familiar with Taro’s works, his catalogue consists of both of the Nier games and the Drakengard series. Not only does this make 404 Game Reset his first work outside of the Square Enix umbrella, but it also means that you can and should expect an insanely detailed, dark, and well-written storyline to boot within 404 itself. The games Taro has worked on are known for their lore and incredible character writing, so it’s safe to say 404 will be the same way.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s discuss what you can expect from this one. 404 Game Reset plays similarly to classic bullet hell shoot-em-ups of days past, though they’re fully rendered in 3D instead of the old 2D style. You’ll collect characters, level up those characters and unlock gear for them, and then do battle within 3D shmup sequences in-between story sections.

Story-wise, Yoko Taro’s trademark meta-commentary is seen right off the bat, as the primary antagonist of the game is a mega-corporation that ruined the world. Their name? SEGA, of course. It’s up to you and your collection of armoured girls to destroy them piece by piece until you’ve demolished the capitalistic stranglehold they have on the world of 404 Game Reset.
