One of the most popular and accurate flight simulators available for the desktop computers, X-Plane, has now been adapted for the iPhone and released across the App Store – on September 11th. Although it's just a wild coincidence that X-Plane 9 should arrive on 9/11, it does suggest something of a marketing oversight considering the world's reaction to those dreadful events.

But none of that detracts from the game's impressive legacy, and the air of realism it's introducing to the iPhone. Trainee pilots can actually count time spent playing X-Plane 9 against their required flying hours experience; such is the level of the simulator's realism.

This handheld version offers similar experiences, such as different weather conditions, time of day, turbulence and a variety of airplanes to test fly over the mountainous Austrian landscape. With rich topography and crystal clear visuals, it looks like a worthy addition to the X-Plane canon.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
