With that said, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind before you start your adventure. There are so many possibilities and things you can do, it might get a little bit overwhelming, especially for new players. So, let’s break down the most important things that you should know.

Creating your Build

First things first, if you are not a veteran RPG player and you don’t really know what play-style you enjoy the most, you have the ability to check out short videos of every skill Rune in the game. Obviously, if you already know what your favorite type of character is, you can skip this part but it would be a good idea to check out every skill first and find out which ones are your favorites.

Runes

There are two different categories of Rune in UNDECEMBER, Skill and Link ones. Skill Runes are the active skills that you can use in-game, while Link Runes are runes that can be connected to the Skill Runes in order to multiply their damage or add various types of effects. For example, an active skill Rune that deals physical damage, connected with the right link Rune can convert its damage to fire damage. But more about that later.

If you ever played games of this genre in the past, you are probably used to having gears with sockets. Based on the number of sockets, you can add that many gems or runes and whatnot. In UNDECEMBER though, things are a little bit different as gears have no sockets whatsoever. Instead, the Runes itself has a number of sides (up to 6) that you can use to connect it with other link Runes. Something important to keep in mind is that you can connect link Runes to multiple active Runes (if they are compatible).

By attaining essence, you can enchant Runes and alter their grade, slot count, color and the link locations.. A ‘Rune Link Essence’ for example, can change a linked slot’s location. A ‘Rune Birth Essence’ will re-imbue the number of linked slots. A ‘Rune Color Essence’ can change a linked slot’s color. By using these different runes, you can create a skill Rune that can be connected to (up to) six link Runes.

Zodiac Points and Traits

Here is where you allocate points that can increase your character’s basic stats. You have Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence. After you’ve reached level 10, you will gain an additional trait point along with a zodiac point every time you level up. Zodiac traits are passive skills that you can learn in order to further enhance your character. For example, if you decide to play as a summoner, it’s probably worth learning skills that increase minion damage. Or, if you are playing a Mage that casts cold-based skills, learning passives that can increase your cast speed or your elemental damage would be beneficial.

Something important to keep in mind when you are allocating your zodiac points is your gear and Rune requirements.

Runes are divided into three types: Green (dexterity based), Red (strength based) and Blue (intelligence) based. Also, certain Runes require you to hold a certain type of weapon. So for example, if you decided to build a character that uses the skill ‘Venomous Strength’, you are required to carry a ‘Dagger’ type weapon. In that case, it would be a good idea to allocate points into dexterity, as you are going to need a lot of it in order to level up your Rune and carry a dagger weapon. Another example would be the red Rune skill ‘Quick Slash’. To use ‘Quick Slash’ your character needs to hold either a Sword or an Axe so, investing points in strength would be beneficial.

Gears

There are three different types of gears. Dexterity-based gear provide your hero with dodge chances, Strength-based gear provides armor, and Intelligent-based gear provides a barrier shield that can absorb damage.

Choosing the right type of gear for your character can take you a long way. How to decide which type of gears are the best for you? Well, that depends on your Zodiac traits and the skills that you are using. If you have allocated many points into strength, and learned traits that increase your armor, going for gear that grants you armor would be the best option. On the other hand, if you are playing a character that has high dexterity stat, opting for gears that add dodge chances would make more sense.
