Top 10 best console games we'd love to play on iPhone and iPad (2012)

If you own an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 and you enjoy downloading the odd game or two, you'll probably - at the very least - have heard of Fez, which debuted amid much fanfare last Friday.

This highly anticipated title got us thinking about some of the console games we'd love to be able to play on the iOS-powered devices that lie around the Pocket Gamer offices.

We've chosen ten games from XBLA, PSN, and Steam that we think - with a few tweaks - would be awesome to play while you're out and about.

Fez

The award-winning platformer Fez inspired this feature, so we felt it was only right to include it on this list. Plus, it has some gorgeous visuals, as well as a pretty astonishing soundtrack.

Fez sees you rotate and change the perspective of a 3D world in order to help your 2D character traverse levels, snatch items, and complete puzzles.

Limbo
By Playdead Monochromatic puzzle-platformer Limbo has won numerous awards since it leapt onto XBLA, including a Game of the Year gong at the 2010 European Milthon Awards.

This 2D title is packed with nasty enemies to beat and crafty puzzles to overcome - some of which are hidden by the game's dark visuals.

Braid
By Number None Braid is more than a few years old now, but this ageing puzzle-platformer is a perfect fit for iOS devices, especially the iPad.

Braid takes place across six unique worlds - all of which feature a time-based game mechanic. For example, one world allows you to rewind time and undo your actions, which is always handy if you mess up.

Costume Quest

Costume Quest is an interesting RPG that thrusts you into the role of a young child whose sister has been kidnapped by an evil monster.

Your aim is to explore your neighbourhood in search of candy, friends, and costume pieces. With these garments in your virtual wardrobe, you can transform into powerful fighters upon entering battle.

Journey

In Journey, which was created by the developer of both flOw and Flower, you set off on a trek across a vast desert, with the aim of reaching a distant mountain range.

Along the way, you can interact with other players that have taken on the same journey and assist each other if needed, though you can't communicate through either text or speech.

Castle Crashers

You can play Castle Crashers on your lonesome, but it's definitely more fun when you sit down with three friends and work your way through this slash-'em-up together.

You face multiple enemies throughout this medieval adventure, including other knights, a cyclops, and even aliens. These can all be dispatched by whacking the attack button and watching your brave knight use his sword to fillet the little blighters.

From Dust
By Ubisoft Montpellier

This "spiritual heir" to popular PC God game Populous tasks you with manipulating an archipelago environment in order to save a nomadic tribe from natural disasters and other hazards.

There's no better way to manipulate a surface than with your trusty digits, so From Dust would be perfect on the iPad. The iPhone's display is probably a tad small for this particular task, though.

Renegade Ops
By Avalanche Studios

The App Store already houses several top-down vehicle-based shooters, but none is as fast-paced, intense, or as explosive as Avalanche Studios's effort.

There is a storyline here (you're sent behind enemy lines to defeat a madman intent on global domination), but you'll forget about it completely as soon as you start to blow stuff up.

Trine 2

If you've played side-scrolling iOS title Evertales, you'll already have an idea of what to expect from Trine 2.

Basically, this game features three unique characters - a wizard, a thief, and a knight - that you can switch between at will. You'll have to utilise all three to overcome the game's range of enemies and puzzles.

Bastion

Bastion's visuals are incredibly gorgeous and would look simply amazing on the new iPad's large Retina display.

This action-RPG doesn't just look good, though, as it's pretty fun to play, too. You travel throughout the game's world smashing enemies and scenery into dust using a range of different weapons, such as hammers and bows.
