Rusty Lake (of the Cube Escape & Rusty Lake series fame) has released the official demo version of The Past Within, its unique co-op puzzler that's playable across platforms. The upcoming title lets players explore the past and the future with the help of a (hopefully helpful) buddy, as they try to navigate the surreal universe of Rusty Lake.

In The Past Within, players need to put two and two together and team up to solve puzzles in a point-and-click manner. Communication is key here, as headscratchers may only reveal their true secrets once two people accomplish certain tasks. In particular, info from a certain puzzle may only be obtainable from another player's side, making sure that teamwork makes the dream work in this mystery game.

Players will go deeper into the narrative of Albert Vanderboom with one person in the past and the other in the future. There are both 2D and 3D elements in the game, along with a minimalist art style and full cross-platform play. The game is asymmetrical as well and requires no internet connection - just be sure that you can communicate with your super-sleuthing partner whether you're in the same room or online.

The demo version of The Past Within is now playable over on Steam if you're eager to give the game a go and see the co-op action for yourself. You can have a look at the teaser trailer above to get a feel of the gameplay mechanics and see what the atmosphere of the game (and its surreal environment) looks like as well.
