Dogs may be great fun but they demand a lot of attention to keep happy. Walks at the crack of dawn, countless hours teaching house rules and, my least favourite aspect, cleaning up their 'doings' put me off owning one.

Connect2Media's new iPhone title, ominously titled The Dog after a popular puppy photography brand, hopes to give users the best side of owning a dog without any plastic gloves or destroyed furniture.

In a similar vein to Nintendogs, The Dog lets players take charge of a puppy and teach it, nurture it and scold it for ripping up your virtual Ikea sofa.

There are five popular breeds to choose from including Labradors and Yorkies, and a full sized game world so you can take it for walks in the park as well as enter dog shows if that’s your thing.
And you get to purchase items, toys and food for your puppy at the pet store.

There are also achievements, mini-games to play, competitions to master and social networking facilities built in, so if you have a particularly swanky puppy, you can rub your friends noses in its glory through Facebook. The Dog is available from the App Store now, priced $4.99, €3.99 or £2.99.
