Dutch indie developer Vlambeer has most recently been in the news over its cloning spate with Gamenauts concerning Radical Fishing vs. Ninja Fishing vs Ridiculous Fishing.

However, all the time it's had another project on the go with fellow US indie Halfbot - porting its all-action platform shooter Super Crate Box to iOS.

The game's well known on the PC scene having been Gamasutra's #5 Best Indie Game of 2010.

Vlambeer describes it as bringing back 'the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that mattered was getting on that high score list'.

Of course, as well as fighting endless hordes of enemies and collecting every weapon crate you can, there's plenty of retro pixel art and a chiptune soundtrack to enjoy.

8-bit glory

Still, the big question will be how well the controls translate to touchscreen.

Vlambeer's Rami Ismail says don't worry: "We used to think that the level of control required for a game as Super Crate Box simply wasn't possible on touchscreens," he explains.

"When we met up with the guys at Halfbot, they said they could pull it off. Seeing how these guys made The Blocks Cometh, one of the tightest platformers on the iOS, we figured if anyone could do it, it would be them.

"We asked them to do a basic prototype and were amazed at how well it played. It really is Super Crate Box - just as challenging, no compromises, and on the go"

The game is due to be released during September. You can get a flavour of it from the following video.
